Wilson Island Information

Wilson Island came into existence as an island sandbar around 1900 and was named after the former governor George Wilson.  The recreation area contains 544 acres of dense cottonwood trees.  The area is secluded.  There are spacious shady campsites, hiking trails, a cabin, shelters, and picnic area.

Things To Do

Camping - There are 135 well-shaded and spacious campsites in two different camping areas.  The campground offers a shower facility with flush toilets, trailer dump station and 43 electric campsites.  The non-modern camp area offers 20 electrical sites and two areas for organized youth group camping.  A playground is located near the campground.

Cabin - There is a camping cabin available year-round.  The cabin has electricity, one bunk bed, futon, table and benches.  It is equipped with heating, air conditioning and a microwave oven.  There is no water or sanitary facilities furnished.  The cabin is located near the shower facility.

Shelters - There are two picnic shelters available for use.

Reservations - The cabin, shelters and half of the campsites can be reserved by going to www.reserveiaparks.com or by calling toll-free 1-877-427-2757.  The rest of the campsites are first com/first serve.

Trails - Approximately five miles of multi-use trails are used for hiking, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and mountain biking.

Fishing - An Iowa or Nebraska fishing license is required for fishing the Missouri River and Wilson Island.  A half-mile trail along the shoreline of the Missouri River and boat ramp provides excellent access to the river.

Hunting - The entire area, except for the campgrounds and other developed sites, is open for public hunting.  Deer hunting and duck hunting in the backwater area are the primary sports.
